General Guidelines of the Program

    The participation in this program is a voluntary practice of Ashram life and the participant will perform dedicatedly the rules and regulations of the Ashram well defined by Mahatma Gandhi.

    The Objective of this program is to facilitate the Participant to live simple, philosophical & spiritual life which might help him/her find peace within and follow a sustainable lifestyle. These might also help change his/her perceptions towards our natural resources & society.

    As it is important to leave all our modern facilities and must-need-lifestyle behind and one needs to dedicate him/her to the objectives of the program, the Participant will be accommodated in the Kochrab Ashram, established by Mahatma Gandhi, on sharing basis with only very basic amenities.

    The Participant will take 11 vows during the stay and try to follow them.
    These vows are as follow :
    • Ahimsa – non-violence
    • Satya – truthfulness
    • Asteya – no stealing
    • Brahmacharya – self-restraint, including chastity
    • Aparigraha – no possessions
    • Sharir Sharma – working for daily food
    • Aswada – control of diet
    • Sarvatra Bhayavarjana – fearlessness
    • Sarva Dharma Samanvaya – equality of faiths
    • Swadeshi – use of local goods
    • Sparsh Bhavana – against notion of untouchability

    The program is designed in a way that the participant will perform all the routine activities of Mahatma Gandhi which might, at the end, help the participant understand the virtue of Gandhi and importance of sustainable lifestyle.

    Tentative Schedule of the Ashram :
    • 5:00 am : Wake up
    • 6:00 – 7:00 am: Prayer and Yoga
    • 7:00 – 7:30 am: Break Fast
    • 7:30 – 8:30 am: Labour Work (Cleaning of Cloths, Utensils, Ashram Premises etc)
    • 8:30 – 10:00 am: Orientation on the virtue of Mahatma (Understanding the objectives of the vows, philosophy of simple life etc)
    • 10:00 – 11:00 am: Spinning Wheel 'Charkho'
    • 11:00 – 12:30 pm: Kitchen Work, Lunch & Cleaning
    • 12:30 – 3:00 pm: Self Analysis, Personal Time (Writing, reading etc)
    • 3:00 – 6:00 pm: Visit of Mahatma Gandhi's work and establishments, communities etc
    • 6:00 – 6:30 pm: Prayer
    • 6:30 – 8:00 pm: Kitchen Work, Dinner & Cleaning
    • 8:00 – 10:00 pm: Self analysis, group interaction etc
    • 10:00 pm: Sleeping Time

    The activities in the program will be decided according to the duration of the participation which may also include outdoor visits and community/outdoor stays, away from the Ashram, for one or more day for longer duration of participation.
    The activities during the stay may be as follow :
    • Prayer, Meditation, Yoga
    • Self-analysis, Correspondence, Writing, Group Interactions
    • Community visit, Jail/Slum/Hospital Visit & Interactions
    • Using the Spinning Wheel
    • Cooking, Cleaning & other Physical Labor

    The Participant will compulsorily wear 'Khadi' (hand woven Cloths provided during the stay).

    The participant will be self-dependent and perform all his/her work on his own. In fact, the participant is also expected to help other Ashram residents and perform as a team.

    The participant is also expected to work physically in the routine of the Ashram like cooking, cleaning etc. Though, a cook will be present in the kitchen, the participant is expected to help in the kitchen work.

    The Participant should inform in advance for any special arrangements like Translator, Transport for pick-up & drop just to perform properly during the program.

    The Participant should inform in advance about his/her medical conditions like allergy to make special arrangement for an emergency.
  • 13
    Tobacco/Alcohol or any such intoxicating material is strictly prohibited in the Ashram.
  • 14
    The participates shall be provided :
    • Two pairs of 'Khadi' cloths for the program
    • Food and Lodging in the Ashram
    • Local Transport to any outdoor program activity/visit on necessary
    • Pick-up and drop from the Ahmedabad Airport/Railway Station
